Open Question: How loud is the music when being played through the speakers is the iPhone?

I went to the Apple shop today and was messing around with the iPhones cos i’m getting one for christmas. I noticed that when being played through the speakers, not through the ear phones, that the music was really quiet. I suppose it might have that it was loud in the shop but i doubt it. I had it on the maximum volume and i could just about hear the music. So is the music loud when being played through the speakers? I was just thinking that the volume might be like that in the shops for some reason. Anyway, does anyone own an iPhone (3G by the way if that makes any difference) and is the music loud??

At the moment i have an old Sony Erricson and even that plays louder.
